UConn gets exposed by Boston College in weekend sweep
The Huskies' recent string of sub-par performances finally caught up with them against the Eagles.

UConn head coach Mike Cavanaugh often talks about the importance of separating performance from results. The Huskies need to focus on how they’re playing, not the score. If they stick to their process, as they like to say, the wins will eventually follow.
Usually, the coach brings that philosophy up when UConn plays well in a losing effort. But recently, the opposite has been the case. The Huskies have been getting results, but their performances haven’t been up to par.
UConn entered this weekend with a 7-2-1 record since the calendar flipped to 2026. During that stretch, the Huskies claimed a second straight CT Ice championship as well as a five-point trip to Maine.
Despite that, UConn hasn’t played its best hockey — which Cavanaugh has readily admitted after numerous games.
“I just don't think we played to our potential in the first period,” he said in a 3-1 win at LIU that required the Huskies to score three goals in quick succession in the middle stanza.
“You don't get a gold star for playing one period out of three,” he leveled after a 5-3 loss to UMass Lowell.
“Some days, you just don't have it,” the coach conceded following a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Vermont. “Some days are off and we were off.”
“The second period, they were much better than us,” Cavanaugh said when UConn beat Quinnipiac in the CT Ice final.
“We started slow,” he pointed out after a 2-0 victory at Northeastern.
“I'm not sure we deserved those two points tonight,” were his words following a 3-3 tie at Maine.
This weekend against Boston College, the results finally matched the performances. The Huskies were swept for the first time all season, falling 5-2 on Friday night before going down 2-1 in overtime the following day.
