UConn men’s hockey fell to the Boston College Eagles 2-1 in overtime on Saturday at PeoplesBank Arena. The Huskies scored the first goal 12 minutes in but didn’t find the back of the net again.
After dropping a 5-2 decision in Chestnut Hill on Friday night, UConn suffered its first weekend sweep of the season. Kaden Shahan scored the lone goal for the Huskies while Tyler Muszelik stopped 26 of 28 shots. Both teams went 1-6 on the power play.
The officials made themselves the stars of the show in the first period. 12 penalties were called in the opening 20 minutes, eight of which were matching minors. Naturally, both teams converted on the power play.
UConn started the scoring. Alexandre Blais won the puck in the corner and found a wide-open Shahan on the far side. The sophomore drilled home a one-timer and gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead.
A few minutes later, BC answered back. Dean Letourneau broke up a clearance attempt from UConn, got the puck and fired a shot past Muszelik to pull the Eagles even at 1-1.
After all the action in the first period, the middle stanza proved to be far quietier. There were no penalties or goals, though both teams had chances. Tabor Heaslip had a great look on the doorstep turned away, Shahan deked around a defender on a 2v1 but couldn’t finish and Tom Messineo hit the post from the slot. Meanwhile, Muszelik denied a dangerous shot from James Hagens and later got an assist from the crossbar.
The third period featured end-to-end action but still, neither team could find a winner. BC had the best chances — it sprung free on a breakaway that Muszelik stopped, then Viking Gustafsson Nyberg cleared a puck out of the crease before blocking a shot that was headed towards an open net.
The two sides remained tied at the end of regulation, 1-1.
Overtime didn’t last long. 27 seconds into the extra period, Lukas Gustafsson buried a back-side one-timer to give BC the 2-1 victory.
10,494 people showed up to the old mall on Saturday, the second-largest crowd in program history.
With the loss, UConn falls to 17-9-4 overall and 11-7-2 in Hockey East.
