UConn men’s hockey didn’t do much of anything well against UMass Lowell on Friday night. The Huskies lost the special teams game 2-0, gave up three goals in the final four minutes of the second period and were thoroughly outplayed by the visitors en route to a 5-3 defeat in Hartford.

“I got to give Lowell credit. I thought they were the better team, they deserved to win,” UConn head coach Mike Cavanaugh said postgame. “A lot of people might look and think special teams cost us the game… but I think it was more than that. I thought they were better 5-on-5 as well for the majority of the game. All the credit to them, they out-played us tonight.”

Despite trailing 4-1 through 40 minutes, the Huskies mounted a comeback bid in the third period. They cut it to 4-2 just 1:02 into the frame then pulled within one with 2:19 remaining but couldn’t find the tying goal.

That was little consolation to the head coach, though.
