UConn men’s hockey goaltender Callum Tung is moving on after signing a three-year, entry-level contract with the New York Rangers on Tuesday. He’ll join the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack on an amateur tryout for the remainder of the 2024-25 campaign.
Tung arrived in Storrs this past fall after one season in the BCHL but missed the first 12 games. He returned against UMass Lowell on Nov. 22 and ended up putting together one of the best campaigns by a goaltender in program history. His .933 save percentage ranks first (minimum 10 starts) while his 2.01 goals against average sits second.
After rotating with Tyler Muszelik through the Hockey East Playoffs, Tung won the starting job in the NCAA Tournament. In two games, he stopped 59 of 63 shots and did all he could in the regional final vs. Penn State to get the Huskies to the Frozen Four.
While UConn hoped it could retain Tung, it had been prepared for the possibility of him leaving. The Huskies had to fend off an NHL team last summer to get him on campus and he held multiple offers before choosing the Rangers.
The team is well-equipped to replace him. UConn should get Muszelik (2.28 GAA, .914 sv%) back for his senior season and will likely bring in Kam Hendrickson from the junior ranks. This year, he split time in the USHL between the Omaha Lancers and Waterloo Black Hawks and owns a 2.52 GAA and .911 save percentage in 34 career games.
A native of Chanhassen, Minnesota, Hendrickson is listed at 6-2, 185 pounds and catches with his right hand. He’s eligible for the 2025 NHL Draft and is ranked 29th among North American Goalies in the Central Scouting Rankings.
Tung is the Huskies’ second departure of the offseason after junior defenseman Jack Pascucci entered the transfer portal on Monday.
