UConn men’s hockey added depth in goal with the commitment of Thomas Heaney out of the NAHL. He’ll likely serve as the Huskies’ third stringer behind fellow incoming freshman Callum Tung and a transfer — essentially filling the role of Matt Pasquale, who will graduate this spring.

An ‘03 prospect out of Oceanport, New Jersey, Heaney is listed at 6-1, 170 pounds and catches with his left hand. He played at Mount St. Charles Academy in Rhode Island prior to his three seasons in juniors. Heaney split the 2021-22 campaign between the NAHL’s Johnstown Tomahawks and USHL’s Omaha Lancers before spending the last two years with the NAHL’s Maine Nordiques. This past season, Heaney owned a 3.36 goals against average and .900 save percentage in 33 games.

UConn is set to turn over its entire goaltender position with Pasquale graduating, Ethan Haider turning pro and Arsenii Sergeev transferring to Penn State. Tung is a top prospect out of the BCHL, where he had a 2.80 goals against average, .917 save percentage, and three shutouts in 38 regular season games with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs. The Huskies are also looking to bring in a goalie from the transfer portal.

With Heaney, UConn is set to add nine freshmen: Forwards Ethan Gardula, Mike Murtagh, Kaden Shahan, and Ethan Whitcomb; defensemen Kevin Fitzgerald, Trey Scott, and Kai Janviriya; and the two goaltenders. The Huskies also have one commitment out of the portal already: Defenseman Nick Carabin from Princeton.
