UConn hires Sean Walsh as new assistant coach

On Wednesday, UConn men’s hockey announced Sean Walsh as the program’s new assistant coach. He replaces Nick Peruzzi, who left for Wisconsin earlier in the offseason.

"We're excited to welcome Sean to UConn," head coach Mike Cavanaugh said in a release. "Sean has built an outstanding reputation as a recruiter and has grown up around the game. He has worked with successful programs, has a tremendous work ethic, and will be a great fit for our student-athletes and our culture."

Walsh spent last season as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Alaska Fairbanks, his first job at the Division I level. He worked with the penalty kill and the forwards in addition to video analysis. In his one year with the Nanooks, they captured the Adirondack Tournament, Governor's Cup and UCHC championships.

Prior to that, Walsh coached at Bowdoin College — Cavanaugh’s alma mater — from 2022-25. He also spent time as an assistant at Division III University of New England (2021-22) and USA Hockey development camps, in addition to a brief stint with the USHL’s Omaha Lancers. He received his undergraduate degree from Maine, where he served as a volunteer and video coach.

Despite his limited resume, Walsh is regarded as a strong recruiter and a rising star in hockey circles. He comes from quite a hockey lineage, too. Walsh is the son of legendary Maine coach Shawn Walsh, who brought two national championships back to Orono. Meanwhile, his brother Travis played at Michigan State from 2012-16 while his eldest brother Tyler is the head coach at Division III Gustavus Adolphus.

Walsh joins associate head coach Tyler Helton and assistant coach Alex Westlund on Cavanaugh’s staff. This is the third straight year that UConn has brought on a new assistant. Last season, Westlund replaced Vince Stalletti, who left to join the AHL’s Coachella Valley Firebirds. In 2024, Peruzzi came on after Mike Pereira took over as the head coach at Choate Rosemary Hall.
