UConn men’s hockey appeared to be in good position to come away with a win over the UMass Minutemen on Friday night. The Huskies ran out to a 2-0 advantage in the opening minutes then took a 3-2 lead into the third period.

But even though there were still 20 minutes yet to play, UConn apparently felt it had done enough to come out on top by that point. The Huskies switched off in the third period and allowed UMass to score three quick goals. In a matter of seven minutes, UConn went from up one to down two en route to a 5-4 defeat.

“Third period, I thought they out-played us. We didn't really get our engine going in the third period ‘til we were down 5-3,” head coach Mike Cavanaugh said. “That's what happens in this league when you don't play a full 60 minutes.”

The problem?

“It was a matter of disconnected hockey,” the coach said.
