What went wrong for UConn men's hockey this season?

Head coach Mike Cavanaugh offers his thoughts on how a season that started with so much promise went off the rails.

Entering the 2023-24 season, expectations for UConn men’s hockey were high. The Huskies were coming off a better-than-expected 20-12-3 record and fourth-place finish after losing most of the core that got them to the Hockey East championship in 2022. They returned most of their young roster and seemed primed to take a major step forward.

“We went back-to-back 20-win seasons and I felt like we were really on the uprise,” head coach Mike Cavanaugh said.

Instead, the team stumbled. UConn finished 15-19-2, never won more than two games in a row, and fell to eighth place — its lowest finish in Hockey East since 2019.

“We took a step back,” Cavanaugh admitted.
