Two former UConn player made their respective NHL debuts on Monday night. Viking Gustafsson Nyberg skated with the Minnesota Wild just over a week after turning pro while Ryan Tverberg received a call-up from the Toronto Maple Leafs over three years after he signed an entry-level contract with the organization.
Gustafsson Nyberg took the ice for 24 shifts totaling 21:57. He finished -1 and did not record any stats.
Tverberg went over the boards for 12 shifts totaling 9:04 and ended up +1 with one minor penalty.
After two seasons in Storrs, Gustafsson Nyberg signed an amateur tryout with the AHL’s Iowa Wild but then received a two-year entry-level contract with the NHL’s Minnesota Wild soon after. He recorded his first professional point on an impressive assist in the AHL.
Tverberg starred during his three seasons at UConn, earning Second Team All-American honors in 2021-22 followed by a 15-goal, 15-assist campaign in 2022-23. He’s one of four players in the program’s Hockey East Era with multiple 30-point seasons alongside Tage Thompson, Hudson Schandor and Max Letunov.
A seventh round pick by the Maple Leafs in the 2020 NHL Draft, Tverberg signed with the club following his junior season. In 61 games with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies this year, he has 14 goals and 18 assists.
Gustafsson Nyberg and Tverberg are the 10th and 11th Huskies to make it to the NHL and the first debuts since Marc Gatcomb in 2024.
