UConn stoned in 3-3 tie at UMass

The Huskies had a 53-22 edge in shots, but it wasn't enough to come away with the victory.

Despite a 53-22 edge in shots, UConn men’s hockey skated to a 3-3 tie with the UMass Minutemen on Saturday at the Mullins Center. The Huskies lost the ensuing shootout and finished with just one of six points on the weekend.

With his 50th goal, Joey Muldowney became UConn’s career leader in the Hockey East Era, surpassing Spencer Naas. Trey Scott and Jake Percival also found the back of the net for the Huskies.

UMass goalie Michael Hrabal stole two points for his side by standing on his head throughout the night despite an onslaught of shots from the visitors. Down the other end, UConn goalie Tyler Muszelik made 19 of 22 saves.

After both sides killed penalties early in the first period, UMass got on the board first. UConn’s defense fell asleep and let Justin Kerr walk in on net and fire a shot past Muszelik. That gave the hosts a 1-0 lead with 1:23 left in the opening period.

In the middle frame, the Huskies took over. Entering this weekend, they hadn’t managed more than 24 shots in their previous five games. In the second period alone, UConn put 25 shots on net.

Alexandre Blais appeared to have an easy tap-in goal on the back post, but Hrabal somehow turned it away. The officials ruled that the puck didn’t cross the goal line on the ice and with no definitive angle on replay, the call stood.

The Huskies quickly made up for it. They immediately went on the power play after just five seconds and Muldowney scored from the slot to tie it at 1-1. Right after, UConn’s man-advantage had an opportunity to take the lead but couldn’t convert.

With 4:15 left in the frame, the Huskies finally went ahead. Scott unleashed a shot from the point that beat a screened Hrabal to give UConn a 2-1 lead.

It didn’t last long, though. With 46 seconds remaining in the period, UMass tied it. Even though the Huskies outshot the Minutemen by 21 in the middle stanza, they went into the final intermission knotted at two goals apiece.

Three minutes into the third period, Percival put UConn back ahead. He pulled Hrabal out of position, skated behind the net and banked a shot off a UMass defenseman’s leg and in. The Huskies went up 3-2, though the Minutemen answered just 30 seconds later to make it 3-3.

That score held through the end of regulation. In overtime, UMass controlled possession and played for a tie. Neither team ultimately found a winner. UConn did have a 2v1 rush, only to have the officials blow the play dead after the lights at the Mullins Center went out. The Minutemen weren’t assessed a delay of game penalty.

In the shootout, Jack Musa won it for UMass in the seventh round.

With the tie, UConn moves to 17-10-5 overall and 11-8-3 in the league. Next, the Huskies take on UNH in their penultimate game of the regular season on Thursday at Toscano Family Ice Forum.
