UConn men’s hockey snapped its five-game winless skid with a 4-1 victory over the UNH Wildcats at Toscano Family Ice Forum on Friday night. With the win, the Huskies clinched home ice in the quarterfinals of the Hockey East Playoffs.
Tristan Fraser scored twice while Carlin Dezainde and Ryan Tattle also found the back of the net. UConn went 1-2 on the power play, 1-4 on the penalty kill — with the lone goal coming in garbage time — and also scored an empty-netter.
Tyler Muszelik had a strong day between the pipes for the Huskies, stopping 27 of 28 shots.
After a quiet first period, the action cranked up in the middle stanza. Ryan Tattle appeared to score the opener, only to have it overturned upon review due to an offside call.
Later, the Huskies got the first power play of the night but ended it with a penalty of their own just 29 seconds in. UConn dominated the ensuing 4×4 play but couldn’t break through. After all the penalties expired, Jake Percival had a cross-crease chance robbed by UNH goalie Kyle Chauvette, while a Kaden Shahan redirect hit the post and stayed out.
Finally, Fraser came up with the Huskies’ first goal of the night by deflecting a shot from Percival in. The 1-0 scoreline held into the second intermission.
UConn opened the third period with a penalty kill and came up with another in the latter half of the frame. Moments after the second penalty expired, Dezainde got tripped up, which put the Huskies on the power play. After a couple of clearances by UNH, UConn finally converted. Shahan found Dezainde in transition for an easy tap-in, pushing the lead to 2-0 with 4:40 to play.
UNH pulled its goalie with 3:36 remaining, though the extra skater didn’t do much good. The Huskies dominated possession and Fraser eventually scored the empty-netter with 2:17 remaining to make it 3-0.
The Wildcats pulled one back on the power play with 1:06 left but it proved to be too little, too late. Tattle buried an empty-netter from his own defensive zone with 1.3 seconds remaining to reach the final.
With the win, UConn improves to 18-10-5 overall and 12-8-3 in Hockey East. Next, the Huskies will wrap up the regular season with a trip to first-place Providence on Saturday. Puck drop is set for 4 p.m. ET from Schneider Arena.
