UConn’s strong play finally rewarded with late game-winner

The Huskies piled up the shots in the third period and Andrew Lucas finally broke through with 48.1 left.

UConn men’s hockey appeared to be following an all-too-familiar script in the third period on Saturday night. The Huskies dominated for long stretches but couldn’t convert that strong play into goals.

Through the first 18 minutes of the third, UConn had a 9-5 edge in shots on goal and a 20-9 advantage in attempts — but had nothing to show for it on the scoreboard as it remained knotted with Merrimack at 3-3.

“We’ve been doing that all year, hemming teams (in the zone) and then not getting rewarded,” Andrew Lucas said postgame.
