UConn's problems get worse with uncompetitive loss to Vermont

“Tonight is about honesty and taking a good, long, hard look at ourselves."

The UConn men’s hockey’s season hit a low on Friday night. The Huskies fell to the Vermont Catamounts 4-1 in a game that was never particularly competitive.

The team’s offensive struggles continued — the lone goal came in garbage time with 2:53 remaining when it already trailed by four — but it compounded those issues by adding even more problems. The usually-reliable defense faltered and Arsenii Sergeev had a bad night in goal.

Combined, the Huskies were blown out for the first time all season. Prior to the loss, UConn had been within at least a goal at some point during the third period in its previous four defeats. Tonight, the Huskies trailed by 2+ goals from the 13:36 mark of the first period onward.

“I thought tonight was probably the first game we've played all year long where I've been disappointed with our effort, our compete,” head coach Mike Cavanaugh said. “We didn't deserve to win the game. I thought a lot of other games, maybe we were snake bit. Tonight, I just thought Vermont played better than we did.”
