UConn men’s hockey erased a two-goal lead in the third period to secure a 2-2 tie and shootout win against the No. 15 Providence Friars on Saturday night at Schneider Arena.

The Huskies fell behind after Providence scored a goal in each of the first two periods before roaring back in the final stanza. Carlin Dezainde got them on the board 6:18 into the frame then Ryan Tattle tied it on a 6-on-5 goal with 1:25 remaining to force overtime. Neither team found the back of the net in the extra period, which sent the contest to a shootout.

The first two attempts from both sides were denied. UConn goalie Tyler Muszelik turned away Providence’s third attempt then Trey Scott grabbed an extra point for his side by burying the lone goal of the shootout.

The Huskies earned the result without leading scorer Joey Muldowney, who sat out with an upper-body injury and is considered week-to-week. Dezainde returned after missing Friday’s contest with a lower-body injury and had a hand in both goals.

Each team had a power play opportunity in the first period — UConn failed to convert despite putting three shots on net while Providence took advantage. Kale McCallum blasted a back-door one-timer in to put the hosts ahead 1-0.

The Friars owned the middle frame and doubled their advantage less than five minutes in on an odd-man rush. Given the Huskies’ recent scoring struggles, a 2-0 deficit seemed insurmountable.

UConn felt differently. While a power play early in the third came up empty, Dezainde found the first goal soon after. After that, Providence had plenty of chances to extend its lead but couldn’t put a third past Muszelik.

With 1:59 remaining, the Huskies called a timeout and pulled the net-minder for the extra skater. While the Friars won the initial draw, UConn stole the puck down low and kicked it up high. Dezainde got it to Scott, who zipped it across the ice to Tattle, who uncorked a laser from the top of the circles to even the game at 2-2.

In overtime, the Huskies controlled the puck but couldn’t find a winner. After five minutes, the game ended in a tie and went to shootout to hand out the extra point towards the Hockey East standings. In the third round, Scott ripped a shot glove-side to send UConn home happy.

The Huskies move to 4-4-2 on the season and 2-2-1 in Hockey East. Next, they’ll take on Northeastern in a home-and-home beginning on Friday night at Toscano Family Ice Forum.
