UConn men’s hockey powered past the Vermont Catamounts with a 4-1 win on Friday at Toscano Family Ice Forum.
The Huskies’ top line dominated as Joey Muldowney scored twice while Ryan Tattle and Jake Richard each had a pair of assists. Ethan Whitcomb and Mike Murtagh notched goals as well.
On special teams, UConn’s power play excelled with a 2-4 night while the penalty kill went 1-2.
Tyler Muszelik started in net for the Huskies and stopped 29 of the 30 shots that came his way.
UConn jumped out to a fast start. It got the first power play of the night just 1:01 in and 51 seconds later, it converted to take a 1-0 lead. Muldowney made a give-and-go pass to Tattle and buried the chance to put the Huskies ahead.
They couldn’t capitalize on that momentum, though. Midway through the opening period, UVM scored on its first power play to tie it at 1-1. That score held into the intermission.
In the middle stanza, UConn had plenty of chances to pull back ahead. Carlin Dezainde missed a wide-open chance on the back door during a power play, then Tattle shot wide on a golden opportunity a few minutes later.
The Huskies finally pulled back ahead courtesy of their power play. They dominated play with the extra skater and broke through when Richard slid a pass to Whitcomb, who just needed to put his shot on frame. That gave UConn a 2-1 lead.
2:17 later, the Huskies added another. Muldowney fired a shot from the top of the circles that deflected off a UVM skater and found the back of the net to put UConn up 3-1.
In the third, the Huskies killed off an early penalty to preserve the two-goal advantage, then steadily drained the clock with strong defense. With 5:45 left, Murtagh stuffed a wrap-around in to give UConn a commanding 4-1 lead, which proved to be the final.
With the win, the Huskies improve to 13-6-3 overall and 9-4-1 in Hockey East. Next, they’ll go for the sweep when they host UVM in the second game of the series on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET.
