UConn men's hockey worked by No. 10 Providence, 5-0

UConn men’s hockey fell to the No. 10 Providence Friars 5-0 at Toscano Family Ice Forum on Friday night. The Huskies were never really in the contest — they had just three shots and six attempts in the first period while the Friars went ahead 2-0 on a major penalty and never looked back.

It’s the fifth time UConn has been shutout this season — and the fourth time it’s happened at Toscano.

The Huskies got out-shot 35-22 while the special teams had a rough night: The penalty kill went allowed two goals while the power play didn’t convert on five opportunities.

UConn put themselves in a hole during the first period. Samu Salminen got ejected for contact to the head after hitting Providence’s Craig Needham in the head away from the puck. For the third time in four games, the Huskies needed to kill a five-minute penalty.

It didn’t go well. The Friars scored twice in a 28-second span to go up 2-0, a lead they took into the first intermission.

UConn’s offense couldn’t cut in to the deficit. Despite putting 14 shots on net, two power plays and a few good looks while shorthanded in the period, the Huskies couldn’t light the lamp. The hole got even deeper when Providence made it 3-0 with 6:45 left in the stanza.

The third period was more of the same. UConn didn’t score while Providence added another two goals in the third to reach the final of 5-0.

With the loss, the Huskies fall to 11-13-2 on the season and 6-9-1 in Hockey East. They’ll head to Providence tomorrow to try and salvage a sweep on the weekend.
