UConn men's hockey thumped by No. 2 BU, 6-0

UConn men’s hockey ended up on the wrong end of a sweep for the second straight weekend after getting thumped by the No. 2 Boston University Terriers 6-0 at Agganis Arena on Saturday night.

The Huskies have now dropped four straight games, their longest losing streak since the 2020-21 season and the first time they’ve lost four consecutive games in regulation since 2018-19.

Once again, UConn’s offense went silent. Not only did the Huskies get shutout for the seventh time this season, they’ve managed just one goal in each of their last two series.

Ethan Haider started in goal and turned away 30 of 35 shots before he was replaced by Matt Pasquale, who played the first minutes of his career between the pipes.

BU had multiple chances to take the lead in the first period but couldn’t capitalize. Then the Terriers thought they went ahead when Ryan Greene scored, but UConn challenged for offsides and won, which waved the goal off. The hosts eventually pulled ahead, though. Luke Tuch skated into the offensive zone with speed, went behind the net and beat Haider on a wrap-around to give BU a 1-0 advantage.

The home side doubled the lead in the second period when a defensive breakdown from UConn left Jeremy Wilmer open on a zone entry, which gave him plenty of space to snipe a near-side goal.

In the third period, BU quickly extinguished any hopes of a UConn comeback by scoring twice before the midway point of the period. The Terriers added two more to reach the final scoreline.

The Huskies weren’t totally bereft of chances but they couldn’t get anything to bounce their way. Ryan Tattle hit the underside of the post, Joey Muldowney had a shot go off the end of BU goalie Mathieu Caron’s stick and the power play went 0-2 despite creating some dangerous looks. They faded as the game went on, though — they managed just three shots on goal in the third period.

With the loss, UConn falls to 12-17-2 on the season and 7-13-1 in Hockey East play. Next, the Huskies will prepare for a crucial home-and-home series with Northeastern next weekend. The two teams entered Saturday night tied for seventh in the Hockey East standings with 23 points.
