UConn men's hockey summer recruiting recap
With the Huskies' recruiting efforts likely taking a break for a few weeks, a look back at their offseason additions and what lies ahead.
UConn men’s hockey has been busy on the recruiting trail this summer. Not only did the Huskies have to put the finishing touches on their 2021-22 roster, but they also started pulling in some future commitments.
Since June 1 — when the NCAA recruiting dead period lifted — UConn has picked up five new players. Three of them will come to Storrs this fall while the other two are committed for later.
Let’s start with the incoming players.
Sasha Teleguine — Forward
The final forward added to UConn’s roster, Teleguine is from the area (North Attleboro, MA) and played in the BCHL — two of the staff’s top recruiting pipelines. A lefty born in 2022, Teleguine isn’t huge (5-10, 185 pounds) but he’s described as a dangerous player with size, speed, and skills. Teleguine previously played with Jake Flynn at Thayer Academy.
Jarrod Gourley — Defenseman
After losing Yan Kuznetsov to the pros and Adam Karashik as a grad transfer, UConn needed to reinforce its solid defensive core with depth. Though the Huskies initially went after a younger player, they eventually ended up with Arizona State transfer Jarrod Gourley. He’s been described as a “big, strong defenseman” and he brings NCAA Tournament experience to UConn.
Aidan Metcalfe — Defenseman
Even with Gourley, UConn only had seven blueliners on its roster so it went out and added another body with Aidan Metcalfe. Listed at 6-3, 194 pounds, Metcalfe is a steady player who won’t wow you with his ability but can fill in if the Huskies need him. Barring a surprise, he should be the final addition to UConn’s roster for this season.
UConn also picked up a player who will come in next season and another whose timeline is still undefined.
Arsenii Sergeev — Goaltender
The Huskies bolstered their future goaltending depth by landing Arsenii Sergeev, who will come to Storrs as part of the class of 2022. A native of Yaroslavl, Russia — also the hometown of Vladislav Firstov — Sergeev is a 6-3, 192-pound goalie who was taken in the seventh round of the 2021 NHL Draft by the Calgary Flames. The expectation is he will compete with Logan Terness for the starting job in 2022-23.
Also, I confirmed that Arsenii Sergeev — not Arseni Sergeyev, as you may see sometimes — is how the netminder prefers his name spelled.
Thomas Klochkov — Forward
UConn has broken into a new class of recruits with Thomas Klochkov, the program’s first ‘05 commitment. He’s a forward out of Fort Lee, NJ — an area the Huskies want to turn into a new pipeline. A source told me Klochkov is “one of the best ‘05 prospects in the Tri-State Area” and described him as a long, smooth skater with skill. Considering he’s only 16, it’s way too early to try to predict when he might end up at UConn.
At the moment, UConn currently has 14 future commitments.
The Huskies are set with goaltenders for a while with Terness and Sergeev. As for defensemen, eventually they’re going to have to replace the four-player junior class. It’s not a pressing need but they’ll have to get working on that sooner rather than later.
At forward, the logjam of ‘01 commitments remains a head-scratcher. There doesn’t appear to be enough room for all of them yet I haven’t read, seen, or heard about any de-commitments.
Aside from that, look for UConn to continue making headway with the younger players — specifically ‘04/’05s. If, hypothetically, the Huskies were to land one of the top ‘05 prospects, we’d — again, hypothetically — probably hear about it by the end of August.
Until then, don’t expect much action on the recruiting front.
