Tommy Heaney steps up in goal during baptism by fire at No. 3 BU
After injuries sidelined the Huskies' top two goaltenders on Friday night, they turned the third-string freshman in his collegiate debut.

There’s never a good time to start a third-string goaltender in his collegiate debut. But of all the possible games for that to happen, doing so on the road in a conference opener against No. 3 team in the country with loads of talent and aspirations to reach a third-straight Frozen Four would be at the bottom of the list.
Yet that’s what UConn faced on Friday night at Boston University when injuries forced Tommy Heaney between the pipes.
“He was our only healthy goaltender,” head coach Mike Cavanaugh said postgame. “We only had one left.”
