UConn men’s hockey held off a comeback bid from the No. 17 UNH Wildcats to secure a 3-2 win on Saturday at Toscano Family Ice Forum. The Huskies finished off their first Hockey East sweep of the season with the victory.
Special teams once again played a central role. UConn notched both a shorthanded and power play goal while New Hampshire’s two scores both came on the man-advantage. The Huskies have now converted on the power play in four of their last five games while the penalty kill notched its nation-leading seventh shorty of the season.
Hudson Schandor, Joey Muldowney and Tabor Heaslip had the goals for UConn while Callum Tung stopped 26 of 28 shots between the pipes.
Just like Friday night, the Huskies’ jumped out to a lead by capitalizing on UNH’s mistakes. The Wildcats wiped out an early power play with a penalty of their own, then picked up another just as the previous one expired. While the Huskies didn’t do much with the first man-advantage, they seized on the second chance. Schandor ended up free in the slot and scored top-shelf to give UConn a 1-0 lead.
The Huskies then bookended the second period with a pair of goals. Early on, an odd-man rush for the Huskies ended up with Muldowney, who buried his back door chance and doubled the gap to 2-0. In the tail end of the frame, UNH handed the puck straight to Heaslip in UConn’s offensive zone and he skated in for the easy shorthanded goal.
The Huskies’ lead wouldn’t get any larger than three, though. After the shorty, the Wildcats converted on their power play to make it a 3-1 game entering the final period.
UConn didn’t help itself in the third. A few minutes in, Tom Messineo went to the box for interference and UNH scored on the ensuing man-advantage to cut the gap down to one. Muldowney followed it up with an elbowing penalty less than a minute later, though the Huskies’ PK unit came up big to preserve the lead.
With 1:03 left, Ethan Whitcomb got whistled for tripping to give the Wildcats a 6-on-4 advantage the rest of the way. Ultimately, UConn’s defense stepped up and held strong to secure the win — and with it, the sweep.
The Huskies improve to 11-8-1 on the season and 6-6-1 in Hockey East play. Next, they’ll travel up to Orono for a two-game series with the Maine Black Bears starting on Friday.
