A five-goal third period helped UConn men’s hockey fly past the Harvard Crimson 7-3 at Bright-Landry Hockey Center on Saturday night. The Huskies trailed 2-0 early then fell behind 3-2 after 40 minutes before the offense unloaded.

Ryan Tattle and Joey Muldowney both had two goals for UConn while Nick Carabin, Kaden Shahan and Hudson Schandor (empty-net) all scored as well. Trey Scott racked up three assists in the win.

Callum Tung returned to start in goal after missing the last game with a stomach bug. Although he struggled early by allowing two soft goals, he rebounded to finish the night with 16 saves and the victory.

UConn found itself in a quick hole. 2:36 in, Harvard’s Michael Callow came in off the rush and ripped a shot past Tung from the face-off dot. 24 seconds after that, the Crimson diced through the Huskies’ defense and Ben MacDonald scored top shelf to double the hosts advantage to 2-0.

In the second period, UConn finally started to turn to the tide with a long stretch of play inside the offensive zone. It finally paid off when Carabin released a floater that made its way through traffic and into the back of the net. 1:17 after that, Shahan re-directed a shot from Scott past Harvard net-minder Ben Charette for the game-tying goal.

It didn’t stay knotted at 2-2 long, though. A few minutes later, UConn took its first penalty of the game and the Crimson scored on the ensuing power play to go back ahead 3-2 — a scoreline that held into the second intermission.

Then the Huskies’ offense exploded.

It started just 33 seconds into the third period when Muldowney blasted a one-timer through traffic for the power play goal. 1:21 later, a back-hander from Jake Percival slid through the crease and found a wide-open Tattle, who buried it to give UConn its first lead of the day at 4-3. 15 ticks after that, Muldowney added another with a wrister from the slot to push the gap to two.

That prompted Harvard to swap goalies, though it didn’t ultimately matter. Later in the period — amid yet another long shift in the offensive zone — Tattle re-directed a shot from Scott to make it 6-3.

The Crimson pulled their goalie with over five and a half minutes left and the Huskies quickly made them pay. Schandor scored an empty-netter from behind his own blue line for UConn’s seventh goal of the night.

That locked in the final score of 7-3.

The Huskies open 2025 win the victory to improve to 9-8-1 on the season. Next, they’ll return to Hockey East play with a home-and-home series against UNH beginning on Friday at the Whittemore Center.
