UConn men’s hockey claimed three Hockey East honors in the first round of awards announced by the league on Wednesday. Hudson Schandor took home the Best Defensive Forward Award and the Len Ceglarski Sportsmanship Award while Callum Tung landed on the Hockey East All-Rookie Team.
Schandor is the second Husky to win the former, joining Jachym Kondelik (2021-22). One of UConn’s top penalty killers, the fifth-year has been a 200-foot forward since he stepped on campus. Meanwhile, the sportsmanship award goes to “one player who has consistently demonstrated superior conduct and sportsmanship on and off the ice,” according to the league. Schandor also received the honor in 2022-23 while Ben Freeman (2019-20) is the only other Husky to be selected.
As for Tung, he was named the top freshman goaltender in Hockey East with the all-rookie selection. The Port Moody, British Columbia native started 10 league games, posting a 2.07 goals against average (fourth among qualified net-minders) and .936 save percentage (second) while compiling a 6-3-1 record.
Tung joins Max Letunov (2015-16), Tomas Vomacka (2018-19), Vlad Firstov (2019-20) and Matthew Wood (2022-23) as all-rookie players from UConn.
Next on tap for the yearly honors, Hockey East will announce its all-league teams on Friday and the finalists for player, rookie and coach of the year on Monday.
The Huskies finished fourth in Hockey East and will begin the postseason on Friday when they take on 5-seed Providence in the quarterfinals at Toscano Family Ice Forum.
