After losing Tommy Heaney to the transfer portal, UConn has a new third-string goalie. The Huskies added Ryan Sanborn, a Brookfield, Connecticut native who most recently played in the OJHL.
An ‘05 prospect who catches with his left hands, he’s listed at 6-2, 190 pounds. Last year, played one game for both the NCDC’s Jersey Hitmen and NAHL’s Minnesota Mallards but saw most of his action with the Trenton Golden Hawks. In 22 regular season games, Sanborn put up a league-leading 1.76 goals against average to go with a .938 save percentage then owned a 1.97 GAA and .935 save percentage. He helped the Golden Hawks to the OJHL title and earned playoff MVP honors.
Sanborn spent the 2023-24 campaign with the BCHL’s Prince George Spruce Kings, though he struggled to a 4.21 GAA and .870 save percentage in 23 contests. Prior to that, he attended The Hill School in Pennsylvania and played his youth hockey with the Mid Fairfield Rangers. Sanborn committed to RPI earlier in his career.
UConn is now set at goaltender with senior Tyler Muszelik, fellow freshman Kam Hendrickson and Sanborn. Muszelik is the projected starter, though Hendrickson should see action as well.
Sanborn will be the third Connecticut native on the Huskies’ roster, joining junior forward Jake Percival (Avon) and freshman forward Joe Odyniec (Wilton).
Elsewhere, UConn still has two openings at forward and one open spot on defense.
