UConn men’s hockey put 46 shots on goal but was shut out by the UMass Lowell River Hawks 1-0 on Saturday at the XL Center. The Huskies have failed to score in their two home games this season.
UMass Lowell took the lead midway through the second period and that proved to be all it needed. UConn put up 17 shots in the third and had a full 5-on-3 power play but couldn’t find the all-important breakthrough.
Ethan Haider started in net for the Huskies and made 23 of 24 saves. The power play unit went 0-3 while the penalty kill had a 3-3 night.
UConn more than doubled UMass Lowell up in shots on goal in the first period — 18 to 8 — but, following a familiar script, couldn’t find the back of the net. The Huskies had the first power play of the day but didn’t do anything with it.
The second period was defined by whiffed shots for UConn. The Huskies had plenty of chances around the net but time after time, they failed to even get a shot off.
UMass Lowell took a 1-0 when a UConn clearance hit the linesman before leaving the zone. The River Hawks took advantage of the break — Cole Owen held onto the puck, skated in, and beat Haider glove-side.
In the third period, the Huskies continued to dominate play and held the puck in their offensive zone for long stretches. With just over four minutes left, they got a full 5-on-3 power play when UMass Lowell took down two Huskies after the whistle.
UConn put six shots on goals during the extended two-man advantage and Matthew Wood hit the post as well, but nothing went in. Ultimately, the power play ran out and the Huskies pulled the goalie for the extra skater shortly after but they couldn’t re-create their late-game heroics from last night. The clock ran out as UMass Lowell came away with the 1-0 win.
With the regulation loss, UConn picked up just two of six points on the weekend thanks to its overtime victory on Friday night. The Huskies fall to 3-4-1 on the season.
Next, UConn will head north for a two-game road set against Vermont. The opener is set for Friday night at 7 p.m. ET from Gutterson Field House.
