UConn men’s hockey is hiring a new director of hockey operations, according to a job posting that went up on Monday, July 1. The position opened after Joe Ferriss, who held the role for the past two seasons, left to return closer to home. The application is set to close on Monday, July 8.
The responsibilities of the position include scheduling the team’s travel, helping the coaches with practice and game preparations, data and statistical work, monitoring the budget and other duties assigned by head coach Mike Cavanaugh.
Some of the requested qualifications:
Previous experience working in a Division I men’s ice hockey program
Master’s degree in Sport Management
Previous experience as a Director of Operations at the Division I men’s ice hockey program
Division I hockey playing experience
Considering the latter two qualifications — which are preferred, not required — the hire seems like it’ll be external.
Ferriss’ departure ends a long stint with the program. Over the last 12 years, he spent nine with the Huskies as a player (2012-16), graduate assistant (2018-21) and director of hockey ops (2022-24). Now, the Novi, Michigan native will move onto the next phase of his life.
Prior to Ferriss, Paul Devlin (2020-22) and Morgan Hall (2013-20) served in the role.
This will be the second change to UConn’s staff this offseason. Assistant coach Mike Pereira left to become the head coach at Choate Rosemary Hall. While the team has not officially announced his replacement, multiple reports indicate that Nick Peruzzi will get the job. He spent the last three seasons at Northern Michigan after a stint in the USHL.
