UConn men’s hockey closed 2025 and opened the second half with a decision 4-1 victory over the LIU Sharks on Wednesday at Toscano Family Ice Forum.
The Huskies took a 1-0 lead in the first period then piled on three goals in the final frame behind a season-high 46 shots.
Brendan Dunphy, Carlin Dezainde, Ryan Tattle and Tabor Heaslip all scored while Kaden Shahan finished with two assists. In goal, Tyler Muszelik was on his way to his second shutout of the season before LIU scored its lone goal with 3:53 remaining.
The Sharks created a dangerous look on the game’s opening shift but from there, it was all UConn. The Huskies dominated possession and racked up time on attack, though LIU goaltender Daniel Duris came up with big save after big save to keep it scoreless.
Finally, UConn broke through in unlikely fashion. On its first penalty kill of the day, Kaden Shahan forced a turnover at his own blue line and found a wide-open Dunphy. The defenseman flipped it past the net-minder to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead with their first shorthanded goal of the season. UConn took that advantage into the first intermission.
After the hosts owned the opening period, LIU changed tactics. When the Huskies had the puck in their offensive zone, the Sharks hung a forward at the far blue line. That forced UConn to keep a defenseman back and play 4×4 in the o-zone.
The move successfully bogged the game down, though it didn’t lead to much additional offense for LIU. It managed the same number of shots (nine) as the first period and one fewer attempt (10) while the Huskies still put up 16 shots on 21 attempts.
However, the scoreline remained the same — 1-0 — through the middle stanza.
UConn changed that 93 seconds into the third period. Shahan sliced through the defense and found Dezainde, who scored the easy tap-in on the back post and doubled the lead to 2-0.
From there, the dam broke for the Huskies’ offense. Tattle wired a shot into the top corner to make it 3-0 then Heaslip piled on just 1:26 later with a laser from the top of the circles.
LIU scored its lone goal with 3:53 remaining, though it proved inconsequential.
UConn notches its 10th win of the season and improves to 10-5-3. Next, the Huskies try to sweep the home-and-home when they travel to take on the Sharks on Saturday.
