UConn men’s hockey let a second straight weekend sweep slip through its fingers on Saturday, surrendering two goals in the final six minutes on the way to a 4-3 loss to the New Hampshire Wildcats at Toscano Family Ice Forum.

The Huskies took a 3-2 lead into the final intermission but were out-shot 18-10 in the third period and gave up two goals late to suffer the defeat.

Jake Percival, Ryan Tattle and Kaden Shahan scored in the loss. Freshman Kam Hendrickson made his second career start in goal and kept UConn afloat early in the third period with some big saves but couldn’t do it all. He ultimately turned away 26 of 30 shots on the night.

Both teams scored on special teams — a shorty for the Huskies and a power play goal for UNH — even though UConn didn’t get a man-advantage.

Percival got the Huskies started with one of the prettiest goals of the season. The senior deked around a defender at the blue line, skated towards net, toe dragged around a stick and tucked a shot under the cross bar to make it 1-0.

UConn kept the pressure on and piled up the chances but couldn’t extend the lead. The 1-0 scoreline held into the first intermission.

UNH pulled even early in the second period when it converted a 2v1 but the Huskies quickly answered back. 26 seconds later, Shahan buried a breakaway to re-take the lead, 2-1.

Just over two minutes later, they doubled the advantage with their first shorthanded goal of the season. Tattle forced a turnover behind the net, Joey Muldowney picked it up the pick at the top of the circles and sent a cross-ice pass back to Tattle, who buried a one-timer to make it 3-1.

UNH’s power play would eventually get even. On the unit’s second man-advantage, Jacob Newcombe screened Hendrickson then re-directed a shot past him to pull the Wildcats back within one.

UConn spent much of the third period clinging to its 3-2 lead. Hendrickson kept the Huskies ahead with a few big saves before UNH eventually made them pay. The Wildcats tied it with 5:36 remaining and then jumped ahead for the first time 1:06 later.

Needing to find the equalizer, UConn pulled the goalie with 90 seconds left but couldn’t convert before the clock ran out.

With the loss, the Huskies fall to 7-5-2 overall and 5-3-1 in Hockey East. Next, they’ll have just two days off before battling Stonehill on Tuesday at PeoplesBank Arena in Hartford.
