Notebook: Trey Scott named UConn's third captain
The junior defenseman picked up the letter at the end of the preseason.
UConn’s captains for the 2026-27 season are officially set. Trey Scott has been picked to wear the “A” alongside Joey Muldowney, who will don the “C”, and fellow alternate captain Mike Murtagh. Mike Cavanaugh revealed the news on Monday during his radio show, adding that Scott won the vote “convincingly.”
A junior defenseman from Lunenburg, Massachusetts, Scott has appeared in 66 games with the Huskies, piling up five goals and 26 assists. He also quarterbacks UConn’s top power play unit.
“We’re expecting him to take a vocal leadership role,” Cavanaugh said about Scott.
Since 2022, the Huskies hold one vote for captains at the end of the previous season and another at the end of training camp. Scott is the latest to pick up a letter in the fall, joining Ty Amonte (2022), Andrew Lucas (2023-24), Tabor Heaslip (2024-25) and Viking Gustafsson Nyberg (2025-26).
No word on UConn’s starting goaltender
Unsurprisingly, Cavanaugh didn’t reveal who will start in goal for UConn in the season opener on Friday night against Penn State.
“I'll make that decision Thursday,” the coach said on his radio show earlier in the week.
The competition is likely between sophomore Kam Hendrickson, who posted a 2.44 goals against average and .916 save percentage in four appearances last season, and freshman Veeti Louhivaara, a fifth-round pick of the New Jersey Devils who owned a 2.86 GAA and .905 save percentage with the USHL’s Chicago Steel last year. The Huskies also have sophomore Ryan Sanborn on the roster, though he projects as a third-stringer.
Despite the collective lack of collegiate experience from the group, Cavanaugh doesn’t appear to be worried.
“They’ve all played pretty well,” he said when asked about the goaltenders on Wednesday. “I feel confident in all three goalies we have and I think (assistant coach) Alex Westlund does an incredible job with them.”
Wyatt Newpower retires
After six seasons in the AHL, former UConn defenseman Wyatt Newpower is retiring.
A native of Hugo, Minnesota, Newpower played for the Huskies from 2016-20. As a senior, he wore a “C” on his sweater and racked up three goals, 19 assists and a +23 rating while also being named Hockey East Best Defensive Defenseman.
Newpower played for six different AHL teams but couldn’t break through to the NHL. He came close during the 2023-24 season when the Detroit Red Wings called him up and had him skate during warmups, though he never appeared in a game.
Alexei Vlasov named QMJHL Player of the Week
UConn commit Alexei Vlasov is off to a fast start. The winger with the Victoriaville Tigres took home QMJHL Player of the Week after recording six goals and an assist. On the season, he has eight goals and four assists in just eight contests.
Vlasov wasn’t the only future Husky to claim a weekly honor. Nathan Amidovski nabbed the Brampton Steelhead’s goal of the week:
Other notes
UConn fell one spot to No. 16 in the USCHO Poll despite not playing on opening weekend. The Huskies were bumped down by the arrival of Colorado College, who went from being unranked to No. 15 after sweeping UMass to start the season. UConn will host the Tigers next weekend. Elsewhere, Penn State is No. 17 while Bowling Green received the sixth-most votes for a team outside the top 20.
UConn women’s hockey earned two weekly conference honors: Taylor Belchetz took home Hockey East Goaltender of the Week while Caileigh Tiller secured Hockey East Rookie of the Week.
UConn captain and junior forward Claire Murdoch was invited to Canada’s National Team Training Camp from Oct. 8-14 in Quebec. Since the Huskies are off this weekend, she won’t miss any games while away.
