The No. 11 UConn Huskies suffered their worst defeat of the season on Friday night, falling to the No. 15 Providence Friars 4-1 at Toscano Family Ice Forum. The Huskies were held to one goal for the third time in their last four games despite putting 38 shots on net.

Ethan Whitcomb scored UConn’s lone goal on the power play, which finished 1-2, while the penalty kill went 3-4. Tyler Muszelik started in goal and totaled 36 saves on 40 shots.

The opening period featured plenty of action. The Huskies built a 19-15 edge in shots, though they went into the first intermission down 1-0 after Providence scored on its second power play of the night. Logan Sawyer picked up the puck at the top of the circles and tucked a back-handed shot inside the post.

The Friars added to their lead less than three minutes into the second period when Alex Rybakov sped through UConn’s defense and buried a backhander to make it 2-0.

The Huskies sleepwalked through much of the middle frame — killing off two penalties in the process while Providence had a goal waved off for goaltender interference — before finding a spark on a late power play. After generating a few good looks, Whitcomb drilled a one-timer near-post to get UConn the goal it desperately needed.

That breathed life into the Huskies, who transformed into a different team over the final four minutes. They nearly tied it when Joey Muldowney had back-to-back grade-A chances but he couldn’t bury either. Despite the push, they went into the final intermission trailing 2-1.

UConn failed to capitalize on that momentum out of the break and Providence soon pushed the gap to 3-1. The Huskies challenged for a potential offside but the goal stood due to a lack of conclusive evidence.

The Friars extended the gap during a wild back-and-forth sequence. Jake Richard hit the post down one end before Providednce drew a penalty shot on a breakaway down the other. Tanner Adams scored to make it 4-1, which proved to be the final.

With the loss, UConn drops to 4-4-1 and 2-2-0 in Hockey East. The Huskies will look to bounce back tomorrow night when they make the return trip to Providence.
