'Let's play a no-doubter': UConn dominates Union

When the first intermission arrived on Saturday, UConn men’s hockey found itself in an all-too-familiar position: Scoreless.

But unlike previous contests, the Huskies had reason to feel good going into the locker room. They owned a 30-5 edge on shots, hit the pipe twice, and completely dominated in all three zones.

At that point, head coach Mike Cavanaugh realized his team’s scoring struggles went beyond hockey, so he suggested a different idea to help the Huskies find the back of the net.

“Start burning some sage,” he said on his way back to the bench ahead of the second period.

It worked.

In the middle stanza, UConn scored three times on its way to a 5-0 victory over the Union Garnet Chargers. The win featured as many goals as the team had scored in its previous four contests combined and snapped a four-game losing skid.

“It was probably the most complete game we've played here in a little while,” Cavanaugh said afterward.
