Trailing 3-2 with 2:18 remaining in the third period, UConn went on the power play after a high stick and took its timeout to get everything in order. Head coach Mike Cavanaugh drew up a play off the face-off and made sure everyone knew when they’d pull the goalie and who would go on as the extra skater.
As it turned out, the Huskies didn’t use anything from that timeout, partly because they needed just 19 seconds to score on the man advantage courtesy of a tap-in goal from Hudson Schandor with 2:00 remaining — and also because the unit went rogue.
“I'd love to say I drew that play up, but I didn't,” Cavanaugh said postgame. “They did their own thing and it worked.”
