UConn men’s hockey was doing everything right to close out a victory at No. 15 UMass on Friday night.
As the Huskies took a 3-2 lead into the third, they played on the front foot instead of parking the bus and holding on for dear life. They slowly bled the clock down with smart play and held the Minutemen to just a single shot on goal for over 11 minutes in the latter end of the period. UConn controlled possession well enough that the Minutemen couldn’t pull their goalie for an extra attacker until just a minute remained.
But the Huskies couldn’t close it out. In the waning seconds, goaltender Tyler Muszelik stopped a shot but allowed a rebound to dribble out into the slot, where UMass’s Aydar Suniev picked it up and scored to tie the game at 3-3 with 17.6 seconds left.
