Notes and quotes from UConn’s 3-0 win over Merrimack on Friday.
Shahan stays hot
Through the first 49 games of Kaden Shahan’s UConn career, he found the back of the net on just 10 occasions. But over his last five contests, the sophomore has now scored four times.
Head coach Mike Cavanaugh — who has touted Shahan as a goal-scorer from the moment he arrived on campus — isn’t surprised.
“It's like good hitters in baseball. If they're a .300 hitter, they might go 0-20 at some point but then they'll go 10-for-15. So I think you just don't cheat the game, play the game the right way and you'll get rewarded,” the coach said. “Joey Muldowney didn't score much his freshman year, either. So I think it's just maturation and developing (for Shahan) and you're starting to see some of that now.”
To his credit, Shahan has never worried about his goal total — especially not as a freshman.
“(Last year) we were winning games and made history at UConn, so I wasn't mad at all,” he said. “We were just having fun with the guys and going to battle every game with those guys. So I wasn't even thinking about it all last year. I was just having fun and we just kept winning. That's the best part.”
