Slow start, lack of discipline and face-off struggles sink UConn in front of record crowd

On Saturday, 11,781 fans packed the XL Center to see No. 9 UConn men’s hockey take on Providence — shattering the previous program high of 9,428 set last season.

To put that in perspective, the difference between the old record and the new record (2,353) is nearly the capacity of the Huskies’ main home, Toscano Family Ice Forum (2,691).

UConn couldn’t deliver a victory to those fans, though. The Huskies dug themselves a 3-0 hole, dug themselves out of it, then gave up another three straight goals en route to a 6-3 defeat. To head coach Mike Cavanaugh, there were three clear reasons for the loss.

“We didn't start on time, we take an undisciplined penalty and we're not winning face-offs,” he said.
