UConn men’s hockey fell to the No. 3 Boston University Terriers 4-2 in an adversity-filled night at Agganis Arena.
The Huskies had to start third string freshman goaltender Tommy Heaney after Tyler Muszelik (who started the team’s first four games) went down with an injury, then dealt with two bad calls against them in the third and they tried to mount a comeback.
Heaney gave UConn a chance to win by stopping 25 of 29 shots while Hudson Schandor and Jake Percival scored in the defeat.
The Huskies came out of the gates slow, failing to put a shot on goal in the first five minutes. They eventually settled in and started to dictate play for stretches in the opening period. Joey Muldowney had an open look on the back post, but whiffed on the shot. Later, Tabor Heaslip tried to back-hand a shot on the doorstep but got turned away.
Still, UConn continued to create chances and eventually broke through. Schandor sprung free on a breakaway after blocking a shot and scored five-hole to put the Huskies ahead 1-0 — a scoreline which held into the first intermission.
The lead wouldn’t hold long, though. The Terriers woke up after going behind and went ahead with goals on either end of the period. 1:22 in, Cole Eiserman picked up a loose puck off a draw, took it to the net and fired a back-hander past Heaney to even the game at 1-1. In the final minutes, Brandon Svoboda got the puck behind the defense and tucked a shot inside the post to put BU up 2-1.
Midway through the third, John Spetz got called for a harsh major boarding penalty after a collision that sent both him and the Terriers’ Matt Copponi to the locker room with injuries. BU needed just nine seconds to score, but UConn answered immediately with a shorthanded goal from Percival.
Ryan Tattle compounded problems by taking a slashing penalty to give the hosts a 1:39-long 5-on-3, but the Huskies’ penalty kill stepped up to keep the deficit at one.
After getting back to even strength, UConn had two dangerous chances that bounced the wrong way and stayed out. A few moments later, the Huskies looked as if they’d have a chance to tie in on the power play when Jake Richard got tripped, only for the officials to call him for a sketchy embellishment penalty.
Just as the game returned to even strength, BU scored to extend its lead to two with 2:17 left. The Huskies finally got a power play with 2:04 remaining, but they couldn’t capitalize and the clock eventually ran out on their comeback bid.
UConn falls to 0-1-0 in Hockey East and 3-2-0 overall. The Huskies are off for the rest of the weekend and will return to action next Friday at UMass.
