In the opening round of the Connecticut Ice tournament, UConn men’s hockey moved past the Yale Bulldogs 5-2 at Ingalls Rink to advance to its fifth-straight championship game. The Huskies will defend their crown against Quinnipiac on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
UConn’s special teams dominated as they went 2-2 on the power play and 4-4 on the penalty kill.
Ryan Tattle recorded three points thanks to a goal and two assists while Joey Muldowney, Ethan Whitcomb, Jake Richard and Mike Murtagh also found the back of the net.
Tyler Muszelik, the CT Ice MVP in 2025, started in goal and stopped 26 of the 28 shots that came his way.
UConn didn’t waste any time getting on the board. 1:10 in, Tattle flew up the boards and sent a pass towards the net. The puck bounced around in the crease and eventually deflected off Muldowney and went in to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead.
25 seconds later, they struck again. A shot from Ethan Gardula rebounded off the pads, hit Whitcomb and went in. UConn went ahead 2-0 after just 95 seconds.
The Huskies couldn’t keep the momentum going, though. They took three penalties in the opening period — all of which were killed — then let Yale on the board five minutes before intermission.
2:38 into the middle stanza, the hosts pulled even when David Chen scored off the rush, though didn’t stay that way for long. Just a few minutes later, UConn went on its first power play and converted almost immediately. Five seconds in, Tattle ripped a one-timer into the twine to put the Huskies back ahead, 3-2.
Later in the frame, the unit added another. This time, Richard banged home a one-timer on the other side to the ice to push the gap back to two. UConn then killed its fourth penalty to take the 4-2 lead into the second intermission.
The Huskies dominated the final frame and piled up grade-A chances but couldn’t break through. Yale pulled the goalie for the extra skater with 2:49 left but Murtagh sealed the victory with an empty-netter in the final minute.
With the win, the Huskies improve to 14-7-3 overall.
